Before and After

I was forced to become a partial resident of Nebraska. I still need to change my drivers license and need to get that done soon. I'll finally add it to my list of "to dos". I don't think driving a car with NE plates and having a WI license is going to get me out of any tickets and would require more sweet talk than I am capable of. I know I have lived here almost a year, but there is something about looking at it on your car everyday. Welcome to Nebraska Mandi.

Diapers to Undies

We have hit potty training head on due to inspiration from my friend Michelle. I owe her a big thank you for answering all of my questions and reading literature I was too lazy to read. I was hoping for the prodigy child that potty trained himself and reality has hit that I don't have that child. We have been wearing undies and not diapers for a few days now and I have learned a lot of tricks of the trade from Michelle like:
1. Put an X on a piece of toilet paper and put it in the toilet and let the kids aim for it. The straining to aim is supposed to help in going #2. Unless your my child who has a huge phobia to go poop on the big boy toilet or any where else other than his diaper and now undies. Lucky me! I can report that he has gone once, but it wasn't on his terms so it may take a bit more time.
2. Let your child run in the buff rather than use training pants. Helps them hold their urge better. I was holding out on this one but decided to finally try it because I have a child who doesn't mind feeling "wet". Let me just say I thought Mason had discovered all of his boy parts until he walked up to me with something harder than usual and asked me "uh oh, what happened". I decided to skip the birds and the bees story at this time, but if he keeps it up I might have to give it. Surprise surprise he doesn't mind running in his birthday suite. We tend to run in the buff while we are at home and then we are using big boy underwear for errands and play outside and he has gotten better at not wetting his undies after the birthday suite attire.
3. Let the little one help in the dumping process if using a training toilet. I was doing this wonderful job on my own and had no idea I was robbing my child of joy and accomplishment.
4. Let them bring a toy and books with them. I had brought a few books into the bathroom, but I was not letting any toys past the door. I now let toys in the door and let Mason place them on his step stool to watch him be a big boy. I came in after him to discover he had pulled his step stool closer to the potty chair so they could get rock star seating for the event. I guess sitting on the step stool in front of the sink was just too far to get a good view.
5. Stay positive and have fun. Which brings me back to Mason and his discovering phase. It is obviously bringing pleasure to him and I have to say for the most part I am staying positive and attempting to have fun and actually getting a good ab work out from all the chuckles Mason brings with each bathroom trip.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY NANA

Late last night as I was writing a check for the baby sitter and I asked what the date was and she states, the 26th. I drop my mouth and want to use a few choice words. I looked at Rob and state I now qualify for the Worlds Worst Daughter Award. I will have to look up where they are accepting nominations and get my application filled out. Talk about how to make yourself feel terrible, forget a parents birthday. Being a parent now, I have no excuse for forgetting a birthday, my parents worked their hardest job in raising me and the least I could do is remember a birthday. I contemplated playing it off, for a whole year, and not acknowledging it and just leaving that big elephant stare at me for a whole year in the corner of the room. I took the higher road and called my mom late last night and admitted my mistake and sorrow. Thank goodness she was gracious and accepting of my faults. So to redeem myself I am using my kids of course in singing to her and celebrating her day with a mini cake.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANA! Sorry its a bit late, but better late than never!!!!!!

Ellery 16 Months

This little peanut has hit a growth spurt. She is growing leaps and bounds. Thank goodness. She is starting to eat a lot better and now likes to be given anything and everything that Mason gets. She loves looking at books and talking on her play phones. She also likes digging in every cubard and drawer she shouldn't be in. I find her on top of the chair on the desk in the kitchen helping herself to whatever is available. She loves being around Mason and is a little shadow in things you do. She is shaking her head no for everything even when she means yes. I could ramble and ramble, but I need to get some sleep.

Who thinks this stuff up?

What kind of sick humor is this? You know I love it, and I am only jealous I didn't think of it.

Jump

I don't have to ask Ellery the question "If everyone else was jumping off the bridge, would you?" I know the answer would be yes. The kids are sporting their newly made 4th of July hats. Mason enjoyed helping make his and plastering it with star stickers. They were dancing and parading around in their hats and jumped on the hearth. Mason started launching himself off the hearth and you could see it in Ellery's eyes that she was thinking about it too. I turned off the camera and positioned myself to catch her and found that she didn't need me to assist her on her dismount, so I turned the camera back on to capture the moment. You can see towards the end she questions her judgement.

The Green Man

We were sitting in the parking lot at the gas station waiting on Rob and Mason kept repeating he wanted to go in and say Hi to the "green man". I was a bit confused on what he was requesting, but as we were pulling out I looked into the station and notice a midget size green M&M statue sitting next to the register. Mason had a better view of the inside of the store so I was thinking he was using his imagination when in reality he was just giving me the facts.
Another funny thing he did the other day was when he was talking to Rob on the phone and was playing with his match box cars. Rob asked him what he was doing and he put his toys right up to the phone so his dad could see. It gave me a good chuckle.

New Toy

Our neighbors called and left a message that they were getting rid of a toy we might be interested in. Boy were they correct. Both kids have a few years before they really grow into the toy, but Mason is super excited over his "new toy". It is an ESPN ball zone, it even turns on and counts your baskets and throws, etc. It give the famous ESPN jingle for you and all, Fancy! Our neighbors said it is old, it was passed down to them and now they are passing the torch to us. I hope it survives our children so I can pass the torch on when we are done with it. Mason now requests to go to the basement to play with "my new toy". We have painters here painting the deck and play structure and Mason even asked them if they wanted to see his "new toy".

Pool Time

Mason loves playing in the water, while Ellery is more interested in having a snack pool side and then up for a swim, maybe.

Happy Fathers Day

HAPPY FATHERS DAY ROB!!!
I don't think I can thank Rob enough for giving me these two children. What a blessing to be able to celebrate because of them. I know I couldn't do it without him. I could do a lot of horn tooting over how wonderful a father Rob is. A big time bonus for me is that he loves coming home and helping get the kids to bed. From his perspective I get to spend all day with them so by the end of the evening I am ready for my break and Rob is ready for some interaction time with them since he works long hard hours sometimes. So we are a perfect match and I welcome and appreciate the help. We opened presents after church which through my presentation of presents off. Rob was supposed to open his lame presents of a broom for the garage and light as a feather leaf blower up prior to church and then an after church errand was going to be the sporting good store so we could fit Mason for a bicycle. I still used Mason as my excuse to go to the sporting good store after church, but I think Rob was onto me. We still sent him upstairs to order his new gun for Fathers Day. Nothing like making him do all the paperwork for his new firearm. I think he had a good day, we took him out for donuts in the am and out for dinner in the evening and he napped in between. I was pretty impressed with Mason's card contribution this year. Our card had a mowing theme and I asked Mason to draw a picture of him and daddy mowing and this is what he gave me. The bottom is grass and Mason signing his own name, I don't think he did any differentiating what is grass and what is his name, but I still think it is impressive.

A Fathers Day Tribute

I finally purchased some window treatments for Mason's room. They are the black out curtains, and I am not getting any longer sleep time from them yet, but I am still hoping for it. I did get a steal of a deal for them so I can't complain and I love the colors in them. I loved the colors so much I was inspired to finally paint the canvas frames and put our fathers memorabilia on them and hang them up in Mason's room for all of us to admire. I think it is pretty cool to have my dad's Highway Patrol badge, stars, and name plate displayed along with Rob's dads wings and a few metals we found. I am sure Rob has many memories of his dad in his wings as I do of mine in his badge. I thought it was the coolest thing when my dad let me help clean and shine them and he cleaned and shined them every night before he went to work the next day. Funny how even the smallest things you do with your father as a child leave a long lasting memory and impression. I am blessed with a wonderful father and a great Papaw to my kids and I am saddened to never have met Rob's father, but if you can turn out a kid as good as Rob, he had to be a pretty special man as well. I hope everyone takes time to reflect on special memories with their dad's and I hope the dads realize how special and dear they really are!
HAPPY FATHERS DAY!

Zzzzzzzz's

Since Rob gets to experience most everything I put on the blog first hand, he isn't a faithful follower or reader so I should be safe for a few days until one of you rats me out.
We have a lot of discussions and we like to tease each other and ask for proof when we do something that might not make ourselves or others proud. In some instances we ask for proof because we are in denial as well. I classify this video and post as a denial issue. Next time Rob asks me to prove it, I am going to refer him to this entry as evidence, he is going to kill me for this, but it makes me laugh so hard I could almost wet myself. I sometimes wake up the next morning not feeling as rested as I think I should. It isn't the kids waking me up or keeping me up, but it is my husband's snoring. Nothing is wrong with the video, you just need to have your volume turned up so you can see how it feels to me sometimes sleeping next to Rob. Thank goodness he doesn't snore like this every night, usually it is when he is really tired.

Shhhh I hear an airplane

I had a request to post a picture of Ellery walking and playing and I also need a better bow to go with this outfit. Nana is a faithful reader and should get the hint, but she might approve of the red one I put with it. I know how Papaw feels about the bows, but I love them so she shall keep wearing them! I hit the jack pot while I was recording her. She puts her finger to her mouth and shooshes everyone because she hears an airplane and points it out. The shooshing started with Mason, he would shoosh us and say "guys shoosh, I hear something" and then point to the airplane. Our little Ellery has caught on quick and now likes to shoosh and point!

Mahoney State Park take 3

Late in the evening we headed out for a walk up the 70 foot observation tower. Mason climbed up the whole way while I carried Ellery in her sling. I tell you the best baby gift ever was my New Native baby sling. The tower was a bit freaky. Nebraska wind is fierce and the tower swayed ever so slightly with the wind. It was beautiful being above the treetops and looking out. We were able to watch a train go by from high above and see a deer walk through the parking lot and park area. Mason and Ellery loved running around the top and afterwards we took a short hike in the woods. We thought we could get down to the water, but the trail stopped at a cliff above the water.

Mahoney State Park Take 2

Following the horse ride we hit the aquatic center. It was packed full of people and fun. We stayed for 4 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. Ellery was her usual self and slow to warm up to the idea of water and playing in it. Once she warmed up to the idea, she wouldn't let you hold her hand and loved wading through chest deep. She took a few spills and went under and we would scoop her up and she just kept going like nothing happened. She also tried following Mason around which wasn't easy. Mason was here there and everywhere. He started on a teeny tiny slide and then worked his way up to going down the tube slides seen in the picture. He climbed the stairs himself and slid down the slide feet or head first depending upon his mood. He had no issues going under the water, picking himself up and heading out for more. Rob took them into the wave pool, but I wasn't a fan. I think it brought back memories of me feeling like I was about to drown when I went to Fantasy one year with my brother. I like sitting on the edge, and playing in the wakes but that is about it for me.

Mahoney State Park Take 1

I consider going to a state park that is within 30 minutes of the house a staycation. I had heard multiple stories on how much fun Mahoney State Park was so I decided to plan a staycation for us. We loaded up the kids yesterday and packed everything but the kitchen sink and headed out. We stayed over night in a two bedroom cabin, my idea of camping. Rumor has it if you want to get a prime cabin for next year at this time you better do some booking now. I called to book our reservations 5 months ago and the pickings were slim and only one consecutive night stays available, which worked out best us. We had a wonderful time, but kept ourselves busy with all sorts of activities and wore everyone out. We didn't get to experience everything the park had to offer, but here are a few of the highlights.
Mason rode a pony for the first time. In the past he would always walk up to the ponies and pet the ponies but wouldn't sit on the pony for any length of period. Yesterday he rode the pony, but we are still confused if he actually enjoyed it. Thank goodness Chester was a gentle soul, I am sure he has had many riders like Mason he wished he could have bucked off. If ponies could talk, I am sure Chester would give us an earful.

Ellery was not feeling any love towards the ponies. When we walked up she immediately turned away and cuddled into me. We did walk up to the ponies and she stood next to them with a death grip on me. She did warm up to petting the horse, Rusty, but only on her terms.

Monkey on my chest

We don't carry a monkey on our back around here we carry him on the front. Meet Abu, Mason's pet monkey. He requests for Abu to be hooked to him often and he holds his tail up appropriately so he doesn't trip on him. Abu is such a hot commodity that he shares Mason's affection and takes love time away from his dear stuffed "Double". He loves Abu so much he requests to sleep with him, but something about a 2 foot tail makes me nervous. It is pretty sweet watching Mason walk around with his pet monkey. He twists it's head so he can see things, the head isn't a swivel head so he has to put some force to it. He also gives him kisses and pats him on the back and even supports him when he feels it is needed, like walking down the stairs and shielding Abu from the dog. Abu was never used for his intended purchase. Abu was originally purchased for a trip prior to Ellery being born to harness Mason in the Chicago airport, but I didn't have to use it. I thought I had wasted my money, but once again my child will prove me wrong.

Swimming

We took Mason and Ellery to the pool this afternoon and they had a wonderful time. Ellery is more interested in getting snacks and sitting pool side rather than getting in the pool. Rob scooped her up and took her in to let her play a bit and she wasn't that excited about it, but sghe did better than last time he took her in. He also took her down the slide that Mason went down multiple times. Mason enjoyed it a bit more than she did. In her defense, the water was a bit cooler today and I don't think she cared for that.

College World Series

Thanks to our realtor friend Mark Renner we were able to experience the College World Series with seats that had backs and next to the front rail. We were between 1st base and right field. The visiting teams bull pin was to our right and we were able to watch them warm up. It made us a bit nervous watching them pitch these fast balls towards catchers that were to our right. We asked a few of the people sitting next to us that have had season tickets for 25+ years if anyone was ever hit and they said no, and sure enough they were warming up and a ball flew off the catchers glove hit the rail sitting by my dad and flew into the crowd. If you look in the picture with my dad and note the rail where his arm is the ball hit around where his hand was sitting. We didn't know what it was because it was so fast, like a bird flying by. We noticed it, but didn't know what it was. Even though we came close to getting hit with a ball, we have nothing to show for it but a nice tale. It was a neat experience. It has me hooked to watch the games the rest of the week to see who ends up winning and to label myself a "fan". We took my dad and Debbie to the game and I think they enjoyed it as much as we did. We couldn't have asked for better weather for our night. We experienced all the joys the ball park has to offer, I really wanted a blooming onion that was bigger than my head, but the line was too long for my liking so I settled on the lemonade slush and ice cream cookie that was as big as my hand.

New Cake Recipe

Grandma Debbie has the best recipes and fun ones as well. She sent me an email with this recipe and I was a bit skeptical to try it. While they were visiting she made some for us after we put the kids to bed and we all gobbled them up. I couldn't believe I could have cake in 1 minute and it taste delicious. Now when I am craving cake I can make a mini serving rather than the whole cake. It seems that when I make a whole cake I end up eating most of it and then try blaming it on the kids and Rob. No more cake blaming will be going on in this house. She made one for Mason the next morning and he was excited!
Mini Cake Recipe
Container: Coffee mug or soup mug
1 Box cake mix (any kind
1 small box instant pudding (any kind)
Egg whites (you can buy just the egg whites, they last for a long time)
Water
Cake topping (frosting, pie filling, nuts, canned fruit, anything you would like to top your cake with) Use your imagination…
Spray mug with Pam (or other brand)
Put topping in the bottom of your mug (cover the bottom)
Mix 1 dry box cake mix with 1 small box of pudding (you can use any kind of cake or pudding mix) This will make several cakes. Put remainder of dry mix in air tight container for use later.
Add 1 tbsp water and 3 tbsp egg white to ½ cup dry mix. Mix well removing all lumps
Spoon into mug
Microwave 1 minute at 70% power (may take a little longer depending on microwave
Invert onto plate. Make a wish and ENJOY!!!!!

Zoo with Papaw and Grandma Debbie

Papaw and Grandma Debbie came up for a visit and we took them to the zoo. We had a wonderful time at the zoo and again we were able to see another part of the zoo we hadn't discovered and Mason rode the train with Papaw for the first time. It was quite the scene, Mason came around the corner right when a train was taking off and started chasing after it and screaming for it. It took him a few minutes to realize we were going to catch the next one and he was going to get to ride. He was thrilled as can be to ride the train and look at animals, I think Papaw was just as thrilled.
Back to the beginning of our excursion. It is the weekend of the College World Series and the stadium is right next to the zoo. I knew it was going to be busy, but it was a complete frenzy at 10 am. We had to park far away and take two cars because my car isn't big enough to carry our guests. Papaw and I rode together and ended up with a great story without having to add any embellishments. It all started with us sitting in traffic and then taking a slight detour. We decided to park in a lot we would have to pay, but ended up being coaxed into a private yard by a cute little boy. Little did we know the yard was like a forest with trees dispersed about and the ground was wet and muddy from all the rain we have been getting. We headed down the little hill to turn around and park closer to the front of the house so we could push the wheel chair easier and ended up getting stuck a few times. At one point I am the only one behind the truck trying to push us out. It had to be a sight and I have no idea why I didn't take a picture of the fiasco. We are very grateful to a group of young men who were suckered into the same lot as we were. They tried to push us out as well and in the end they ended up towing us up the hill. It was a sight. I held the young men's "drinks" while they helped us out, I almost asked them to mix me one up as well. Thank goodness people are so thoughtful and helpful. Rob and Debbie wondered what took us so long to catch up with them and the kids and we told them the story and got a "No Way". I should have followed up with my new favorite saying of "Shut the Front Door, You will never believe what we just experienced."

ABC's

A singing kid just makes me smile. Ellery pretends to sing as well, she can get as far as d with her version and then trails off, but unfortunately she doesn't sing in this video. Also, this is the best I can get with the camera. For reasons unknown to us Mason tends to sing in a constipated like voice when the camera comes out. I practically had to bribe him to sing this good for the camera or you would have had to listen to the constipated version. Oh heck who I am kidding, enjoy this constipated version as well.

Garbage Man

I find all sorts of innovative things Mason does with his toy. He really is like a sponge and notices things that I don't think he notices.
Our friendly piggy finger puppets found themselves being garbage collectors. It amazes me how small children's minds work, they really do think outside the box and play and put things that we don't in our adult life due to limitations we put on ourselves for no unknown reasons. My kid has inspired me to break down these barriers and go the imaginative distance.

I'm Not a Big Boy

We have been working on the potty training here in the Chaplin house I think Ellery might train before Mason. I don't think Mason is that thrilled about it. He has only told us a couple of times that he needed to use the big boy toilet and he refuses to poop in it. Yet, even when it isn't fun for him or me he gives me a chuckle.

Mandi: Mason it's time to go to the bathroom and sit on the big boy toilet.
Mason: I'm not a big boy. (thinking if he isn't a big boy he doesn't have to use the big boy toilet)
Mandi: You're a big boy now come on and lets go.
Mason: I'm not, I'm not a big boy. (repeating at an almost scream)
Mason then requests to play with the leap pad.
Evil Mandi: The leap pad is a big boy toy. If you're a big boy then you can play with it and big boys use the big boy potty.
Poor Mason: (looking pathetic walked to mommy and used the bathroom so he could play with his toy)
Ellery: (follows like a shadow and mans her position on the potty training toilet gleaming with joy.)

Basketball Star and BMX Rider

While we were visiting the Taste of Omaha, we happened upon the lunchable booth where they take your child's picture and then add it to a video. You could choose from a skate boarder, basketball player, and bmx rider. Mason wanted to be a basketball star and we made Ellery a bmx rider. We got a good laugh watching our children's new star fame.

Taste of Omaha

We loaded up the clan and headed to downtown Omaha this afternoon for a Taste of Omaha. We keep saying we are going to explore downtown Omaha more, but never seem to get around to doing it. Well we got around to exploring it today with hundreds of others. We walked a nice path along the river and listened to live music and then paid a ridiculous amount of money to get tickets so we could go to different vendors and taste Omaha. We did happen upon an exotic pet show and that captivated Mason. We might as well tattooed sucker parents on our foreheads. We paid $5 to allow our child to get a picture with an exotic pet and touch it. They had the kangaroo out first so we choose that for him, he had no idea he could have chosen an alligator, boa constrictor, fox, and some other creature he called a monkey but wasn't a monkey. You can plainly see he was less than thrilled to take a picture, that required him to turn around and not look at the kangaroo or touch it. He was much more interested in looking and touching rather than posing. Can't say that I blame him.

Elton John and Billy Joel

ICONIC. I forgot to post this a few weeks ago, but Rob got us tickets to the Elton John/Billy Joel concert. It was fabulous. We have downloaded most of the songs and have been grooving away to the hits. I thought I would enjoy Elton more than Billy, but I was wrong. Elton performed for us, but Billy interacted and performed. Billy was much more showy and personable and talked to the audience between songs where Elton just played one song right after the other and never acknowledged the audience. It was amazing to see and I would highly recommend seeing the show if you get a chance.
We also made some friends at the show. we were going to our seats we had to walk through a few people because we came in from the wrong side. I guess I should clarify and say Rob made a friend. The female pictured here groped him as we walked by. Oooo la la! We of course forgot to take the camera in so we took pictures on Rob's phone. I pretended to be taking pictures of the concert but faced the camera backwards to catch the perpetrator, but I think her husband was onto me!

Sleeping Baby

Nothing beats peaking in on a sleeping baby. I think we have a little virus and I think Ellery and I are getting to experience it a bit more than the rest. It has made us all a bit more tired. I would be happier if it was just affecting the kids because Mason slept until 7:00 am this morning and Ellery woke up for a bit but when we when to go get her she was back sleeping and slept until 8:45. So since I am tired as well I got a little extra time to relax.

God Bless You

I put a movie on for Mason to watch and took Ellery upstairs with me to take a shower. I decided to let her roam freely in the bedroom/bathroom and did the once glance over before getting in the shower. I usually have Mason with her to help distract or play with her. I started taking a quick shower but was taken in with shaving my legs and letting the water just take me away. I called out for Ellery a couple of times and she would appear with a toy. I let myself get taken away too long because I called for her towards the end and she didn't appear. When I got out of the shower I found her in our bedroom with a full box of tissues. Only a few tissues remained in the box and she was thrilled wiping her nose disposing that tissue to the side and picking up another one. Mason never got a hold of a box of tissues but he did enjoy pulling every wipe out of the container.

Push Me

Mason and Ellery have a great time playing with each other, for the most part. She loves to crawl onto the push toy and Mason enjoys pushing her on it. I do have to ask him to slow down every once in a while. I think I might have to start making them wear bike helmets if they keep up the speed issue for fear of road rash. He also has started tackling her. We have new rules you can only tackle on carpet or grass. Believe it or not she seems to enjoy it when it is in the designated areas. Speaking from experience we know she isn't a fan of being tackled on the hard wood floors.

Cute as a bugs ear

I can't thank Nana enough for our custom bows for all of our outfits! Ellery is beautiful without them, but they do add a little something. I put her headband on her and tell her she has a bow on and she looks really pretty. She then takes her hand and rubs the bow as if she can actually touch pretty.
